Scion FR-S Repeats SEMA Win as Hottest Sport Compact

Toronto, ON., (Nov. 6, 2013) – It’s back again for the win. Judges named the Scion FR-S the Hottest Sport Compact for the second year at the 2013 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show in Las Vegas. Last year marked the first appearance of the FR-S at SEMA.

The award goes to the hottest ride in the enthusiast market, as demonstrated by the SEMA Show exhibitors and industry experts who feature the car at the event. SEMA organizers estimated this year’s show would host about 130,000 automotive specialty product professionals from more than 130 countries.

The rear-wheel-drive FR-S is known for its lightweight design, impressive performance and affordability. It comes standard with a 2.0-liter flat boxer engine capable of producing 200 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque.

Consumer Reports

TORONTO, ON., [Oct. 29, 2013] – We're pleased to report that in its annual Consumer Reports vehicle reliability rankings, Lexus took the top spot, up from third place last year, and Toyota retained its No. 2 ranking.

The five most reliable vehicles in the rankings are: Toyota Prius, Lexus ES 300h, Scion xB, Toyota Prius c and the Subaru Forester with the non-turbo-charged engine.

Ten of the highest scorers in the survey were Toyotas. Of the eight Lexus models in the survey, six got top marks. All Lexus models earned an above average reliability score, while all Toyota models earned an average or better reliability score.

To be recommended by Consumer Reports, a vehicle must perform well in a battery of its tests, have average or better reliability in its annual Auto Survey and perform well in government and industry crash tests.

During its annual reporting, Consumer Reports said it will no longer recommend vehicles that receive a “poor” rating in Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) crash tests or for poor scores on reliability. As a result, the publication revoked its recommendations for Toyota’s Camry, RAV4 and Prius v based on small offset crash test results.

The new IIHS small offset crash test involves only a front corner of a vehicle and goes beyond federal requirements. It is not currently part of IIHS' Top Safety Pick designation.

The Camry, Prius v and RAV4 are on the current IIHS “Top Safety Pick” list which includes 21 Toyota vehicles, more than any other manufacturer.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) periodically develops new, more severe or specialized tests that go beyond federal requirements. With the small over-lap test, the Institute has raised the bar again, and we are responding to the challenge. We are looking at a range of solutions to achieve greater crash performance in this area. Toyota has made changes to the Camry to improve its performance in the crash test, and IIHS is planning to retest the car in December.

Drivers looking for a green vehicle at a good value need look no further. Toyota, Lexus and Scion took top honours in the 2013 Green Car Guide. Six of the top ten overall green vehicle and "best value" scores are held by the Toyota family.

The guide is designed to help new vehicle buyers with reviews and rankings of low-emission and fuel efficient vehicles.

"Anyone who has a passion for fun, affordable and environmentally friendly vehicles will find what they're looking for in this guide," said Bob Carter, Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. senior vice president of automotive operations. "Customers are interested in this type of unbiased data and we're proud to see our Toyota, Lexus and Scion vehicles recognized in such a prominent way."

Scion iQ wins second Vincentric Award in a Row

TORONTO, ON., (September 23, 2013) – When Vincentric presented its inaugural Best Value in Canada awards last year, Toyota claimed the brand award for passenger cars while also being recognized with best value awards for 10 individual vehicles. Several of those vehicles have reached the tall podium this year including last year’s winner, the Scion iQ. In a fiercely competitive compact market, the 2013 Scion iQ has been named the Vincentric Best Value in Canada (Micro) for the second consecutive year.

To determine the 2013 Vincentric Best Value in Canada awards, Vincentric analyzed over 1,800 vehicle configurations measuring cost-of-ownership using eight different cost factors: depreciation, fees & taxes, financing, fuel, insurance, maintenance, opportunity cost, and repairs. Using a statistical model, the company identified the Vincentric Best Value in Canada winners by measuring which vehicles had lower than expected ownership costs given their market segment and price. With its low maintenance, fuel and nearly 5% lower than expected ownership costs, iQ bested all competition in 2012 and has remained victorious in 2013.

New, Sportier 2014 Scion tC Debuts at New York International Auto Show

Limited-Production Scion 10 Series Models Celebrate Brand’s 10th Anniversary

NEW YORK (March 28, 2013) – Scion revealed the new 2014 tC sports coupe at the New York International Auto Show, showing off a sporty new look, upgraded interior and an enhanced driving experience for the brand’s top-selling vehicle.

"Scion tC is one of the brand's most popular models in Canada. For the 2014 model, designers wanted to keep tC exciting for today’s drivers without losing its spirited core appeal," said Cyril Dimitris, Director, Scion in Canada. "The result is a 2014 tC with a sportier style and driving experience that will excite current and future Scion buyers."

Aggressive Look with New Exterior Design and 18-Inch Wheels

The 2014 Scion tC is defined by more assertive styling, starting from the front with distinctive new headlamps and an all-new hood that extends lower toward a more open, muscular grille with an embedded tC logo. The new upper- and lower-grille treatments are bordered by LED accent lighting.

Beneath the rear bumper, a new black-out valance features an FR-S style, lower-centre trim piece and lower perimeter reflectors; new advanced LED tail lamps complete the picture. New 18-inch alloy wheels with 225/45R18 tires carry the aggressive character through to the car’s profile. Standard on the tC, the wheels feature a premium dark gray finish, contrasted by eye-catching machined-spoke surfaces.

The tC will be available in eight exterior paint colours, including two new additions, Absolutely Red and Blue Streak Metallic.

Upgraded Materials and Scion Standard Display Audio Enhance Interior

The 2014 Scion tC’s cabin adds new technology, additional convenience features and upgraded materials. The tC comes equipped with features that Scion drivers will enjoy, including Bluetooth® compatibility and steering wheel-mounted controls.

Added convenience features for the 2014 tC include auto-off headlamps and an auto-up and down driver's window. The interior is upgraded with premium materials and lighter colour fabric on the seats and the headliner.

Sportier Automatic Transmission and Enhanced Dynamic Handling

Getting there will be more than half the fun in the 2014 tC. Its 2.5-litre, four-cylinder engine delivers 180 horsepower at 6,000 RPM, and it is available either with a six-speed manual transmission or an updated six-speed automatic that can change gears nearly twice as fast as the previous model for both upshifts and downshifts. The automatic transmission now features Dynamic Rev Management technology, adopted from the FR-S, which quickly blips the engine to match its revs to gear ratios on downshifts, limiting driveline shock and adding to the visceral experience of driving the car.

Handling is enhanced by making modifications to stabilizer bar hardware, optimizing the shock absorbers, and by increasing the body rigidity with additional spot welds. Driving enthusiasts will also appreciate the retuned electronic power steering that provides a more engaging response. Together, these changes help the new tC to deliver a sportier, fun-to-drive experience behind the wheel. The 2014 Scion tC will arrive in dealerships in June.

Limited-Production Scion 10 Series Models Celebrate Scion’s 10th Anniversary

Ten years ago, in 2003, the Scion brand launched in North America designed to bring new buyers into the Toyota family and appeal to emerging younger drivers. The brand has accomplished both goals. Since launching in Canada in 2010, 65 percent of Scion owners are new to the Toyota family and Scion is among the youngest in the industry with over 50 percent of owners are under the age of 35.

To celebrate Scion’s 10th anniversary in North America, Scion will launch a limited-production version of each vehicle in its lineup called Scion 10 Series. We are happy to offer Canadians these five unique models. Every Scion 10 Series car will be painted a premium colour: SILVER IGNIT10N. The unique models will number a total of 450 units, which will begin arriving in dealerships in June.

Scion 10 Series features include silver seat belts, a solar-powered illuminated shift knob and an LED Scion locator badge that lights up when the car is unlocked. Each vehicle also carries a sequentially numbered interior badge. The xB, iQ, and xD will feature unique alloy wheels in a graphite finish.

Pat Cyr

TORONTO, Ontario, March 6, 2013 - Pat Cyr, Canada’s premier drift racer, has teamed up with Scion Canada to create a customized FR-S that Cyr will take into 2013 pro-drift competition. It’s the very first Canadian drift car to compete in the DMMC.

Cyr first discovered his passion for customizing cars in his father’s garage, soon to be followed by his need for speed. Before he could legally hold a drivers license, Cyr was deeply involved in BMX, where he first began developing his “insane” racing personality and style. When not racing, Cyr can be found building low-riders and other customs with his Cyrious Garageworks team, or judging local amateur drift events.

"We’re thrilled to partner with Pat Cyr as he returns to DMCC competition this year in a stunning, customized FR-S, and also pleased to share more customized Scion models from our popular Scion Tuner Challenge,” said Cyril Dimitris, Director of Scion in Canada. “These examples demonstrate Scion’s conviction that vehicles are more than transportation – that they are passionate, personal expressions of the unique vision of their owners."

The Cyrious Garageworks’ extensively modified FR-S, equipped with roll-cage and banana fenders, is fine-tuned to match Cyr’s aggressive and crowd-revving racing style. Cyr’s FR-S has been creating a ton of buzz since it debuted at the MontrĂ©al Auto Show earlier this year - get your up-close look at Cyr’s FR-S at the Toronto, Quebec, and Vancouver shows.

You can also catch Cyr hosting the 2013 Scion FR-S Tuner Challenge. Three teams have each customized an FR-S, and are going head to head in 11 grueling challenges, while competing for fan support and votes. Who will rein champion of the road? Check out the action and choose your favourite, here.
